We got to start our online reading program with Calgary Reads this week!  It was so much fun meeting our reading buddies, sharing a book, and looking closely at the pictures!  It is also amazing that all of the students got to take home a brand new book!  We can't wait for next week.



This week we started new literacy centres, and they have been fun!  We are practicing building poems with words we have learned in the classroom, we are trying to find the beginning, middle, and end sounds of CVC words, we are continuing to practice segmenting sounds in words to try and spell what we hear, we are practicing reading in small groups with the teacher, and we have started trying to hear the 2 sounds at the beginning of a word that starts with 2 consonants (for example, st- bl- tr-).

We are also working on building our independence and mastery of kid spelling and trying to write simple sentences on our own. The teacher is giving the students a sentence starter on the board, and one example of how they could end the sentence, and then kids go write the sentence starter in their own books and try to finish the sentence with their own idea, as well as using kid spelling.

Students continue to practice doing subtraction using number lines, and were able to use their skills to solve subtraction problems on a colour by number spring picture! They are really getting good at it!  They also started to learn about what equal and not equal mean when it comes to number sentences.

 We have talked about the needs of plants and animals, and what they really need to live happy and healthy lives. The students already have so much knowledge that they were able to share with the class, so that we all can now talk about these important facts. We are now looking closer in the the value of plants and animals to humans, and why it is important that we take care of the earth.

On Friday we learned a new way to put leaves and flowers on trees using tissue paper!  We created spring trees to add to our fall and winter tress, and they are so beautiful.

 This week was so much fun!  We are having a lot of fun getting to know the students and building our communities.   We have been exploring the idea of community and how we fit in our own worlds.  We talked about how communities can look different, and that they can be all sizes as well.  This week we have started looking at ourselves, and what is important about us.  Next we will move to looking at our families. In math we have been looking at patterns using colours and shapes.  We have also been looking at different ways of representing a number, such as drawing a picture, tally marks, writing the number, and some students have even been able to write an addition sentence.  We have used finger painting to represent numbers up to ten. This week we traced our bodies on a large piece of paper, and learned how to cut out a heart to glue into the center of our traced bodies.  We are using these masterpieces to explore different things about ourselves and who we are. Nov. 9-13

This past week we had a wonderful time doing more fun work in Language Arts! Both classes are working very hard to identify rhyming words when we hear and see them!  We read a poem called "The Fat Cat'".  Throughout the week, each class read the poem several times and worked together to identify all of the "at" words in the poem.  During these conversations we talked about how these words sound the same at the end and that this is called rhyming! October 19-23

What a cold week this has been!  We have all tried to stay warm.  Make sure that you are dressing your student appropriately with snowpants, boots, mitts, a hat, and a warm jacket, as we do go outside for our morning break and at lunchtime. This week we focused on how to fill in a tens frame. Did you know that you have to start in the same box every time?  Ask your child how to fill out these tens frames. Ms. McGill's class also looked at 3 element patterns.  Both classes will continue to look at 3 and 4 element patterns next week. In Language Arts, we have started doing literacy centres.  The children are practicing different literacy skills, such as practicing the alphabet, reading, writing, making magnet letter words, and using play-dough to create letters.
