Welcome to Grade 1

 Hello Fabulous First Graders and families, welcome to our blog!


This is a space that we will share what we are doing in class, as well as some fun pictures from our learning adventure.

Here is the grade 1 teaching team, Ms. McGill and Ms. Secord. Please read below to learn a little more about us!

Ms. McGill:

Hello!  My name is Ms. McGill and I am so excited for everything that is to come this year.  It might look a little different from Kindergarten, but that is okay!  A little bit about me: I am an auntie to a super cute baby, and have a fluffy white dog named Kasper.  I look forward to learning with and from all of you and your curious, hard working minds.  Here's to a year of adventure and discovery!


Ms. Secord:

Hi, My name is Ms. Secord.  I have been working as a teacher with the Calgary Board of Education for 9 years.  I have taught grade 1, 2, 3, and 4, and I love working with kids of all ages.  I have a daughter who is 14, and 2 dogs that I talk about all the time!  I love love love books, and I will be sharing all of my favourite books with you this year.  I am looking forward to this year of learning with all of you, and I can't wait to see everything you are going to accomplish!

 This week was so much fun!  We are having a lot of fun getting to know the students and building our communities.   We have been exploring the idea of community and how we fit in our own worlds.  We talked about how communities can look different, and that they can be all sizes as well.  This week we have started looking at ourselves, and what is important about us.  Next we will move to looking at our families. In math we have been looking at patterns using colours and shapes.  We have also been looking at different ways of representing a number, such as drawing a picture, tally marks, writing the number, and some students have even been able to write an addition sentence.  We have used finger painting to represent numbers up to ten. This week we traced our bodies on a large piece of paper, and learned how to cut out a heart to glue into the center of our traced bodies.  We are using these masterpieces to explore different things about ourselves and who we are. Nov. 9-13

This past week we had a wonderful time doing more fun work in Language Arts! Both classes are working very hard to identify rhyming words when we hear and see them!  We read a poem called "The Fat Cat'".  Throughout the week, each class read the poem several times and worked together to identify all of the "at" words in the poem.  During these conversations we talked about how these words sound the same at the end and that this is called rhyming! For Writing we transitioned from the poem, keeping the same theme.  Each student practiced using s a t i m to write the sentence: "It is a fat cat".  For Art, we completed a guided drawing of Pusheen the Cat (a fat cat) using this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS_PQYIGrTc .   Last week for Math, Ms, McGill's class finished our cups and they were brought home.  The goal of these cups was for students to work towards: I can count to 100 by 1s and 10s, starting at 0.  Ms. McGill's class also rea

October 19-23

What a cold week this has been!  We have all tried to stay warm.  Make sure that you are dressing your student appropriately with snowpants, boots, mitts, a hat, and a warm jacket, as we do go outside for our morning break and at lunchtime. This week we focused on how to fill in a tens frame. Did you know that you have to start in the same box every time?  Ask your child how to fill out these tens frames. Ms. McGill's class also looked at 3 element patterns.  Both classes will continue to look at 3 and 4 element patterns next week. In Language Arts, we have started doing literacy centres.  The children are practicing different literacy skills, such as practicing the alphabet, reading, writing, making magnet letter words, and using play-dough to create letters.
